Olu of Warri Bows to Traditional pressure to Save His Throne

The Olu of warri, who is known for not going back on his word, was forced to do so yesterday.

As it appears the "faith" of the Olu of Warri is not yet as strong as many had thought:

Following a 4-day long protest over his decision to renounce the traditional title of Ogiame, the Olu of Warri, Atuwase II, has bowed to the wishes of his people and their tradition.

The Itsekiri monarch on Tuesday succumbed to his subjects’ demand that he must not renounce the title as it became obvious that the tension around his palace was getting out of hand.

The Atuwase II had planned to relinquish the traditional title of Ogiame for a yet to be disclosed title, but the decision did not go down well with the Itsekiri people.

The Olu of Warri, who claimed the title Ogiame was associated with the “Sea goddess,” said he had nothing to do with the deity.

A statement issued by 22 palace chiefs at the height of the protest, criticised the decision of the monarch to renounce the "Sea goddess" Ogiame title.

It would be recalled that the Olu of Warri had on September 4 renounced the Ogiame title on the grounds that it was not in consonance with his Christian faith.
